Statement of purpose :

Our Post-Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCCs) provide doctors with the opportunities to observe, learn and apply their experience at their respective places of work. The goal is to impact patient care by empowering doctors with specialised knowledge and diagnostic skills along the way.

The department of Hematology under Anand Diagnostic Laboratory and Neuberg Anand Reference Laboratory provides state of the art diagnostic services in Hematology ranging from routine tests to highly advanced tests including immunophenotyping and flowcytometry for neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematological disorders, hemoglobin electrophoresis, coagulation assays and bone marrow reporting. Close collaboration with the departments of Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology enable a near complete characterization of hematological malignancies as per current recommendations. Support from Neuberg Center for Genomic Studies enables a whole range of sequencing studies that help characterize malignancies and predict their outcome.

PURPOSE AND COURSE DETAILS:

The course is designed to augment the candidate’s ability to gather maximum diagnostic information from routine hematology assays and to provide experience with advanced hematology techniques including immunoassays, coagulation assays, hemoglobin electrophoresis, immunohematology, flow cytometry. Sound knowledge of basic hematology is the pre-requisite for optimal learning.

COURSE DURATION:

The candidate will attend the course for six months starting on the first working day of July 2022 and concluding on the last working day of December 2022

INTAKE: TWO CANDIDATES PER SESSION (6 months)
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

MD or DNB in Pathology / MD Laboratory or transfusion Medicine. The degree should have been obtained from a recognized institution. There is no age limit.

COURSE SYLLABUS:

The following areas will be covered as part of the main training over a period of 5 months

  • Flowcytometry - as applied to hemato-oncology and non-neoplastic conditions.
  • Capillary electrophoresis for detection and categorization of abnormal hemoglobins.
  • Immunohematology (Blood grouping, DAT, IAT)
  • Coagulation assays for bleeding and hypercoagulable states
  • Quality control and laboratory automation in Hematology

ELECTIVE POSTINGS – The candidate can select any two elective postings each for a period of 15 days (these should be selected at the time of admission)

  • Molecular Hematology
  • Cytogenetics and FISH
  • Immunohematology (external posting at a blood bank)

Majority of theoretical knowledge will be through self-learning, though part of it would also be through interaction with laboratory staff. Practical knowledge will be through observation and one-to one interaction. Additional knowledge will be through the institution’s planned teaching programs.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES:
  • Through direct interview following screening of the application and bio-data of the applicant in case there are three or less number of applicants. Date and time of interview will be informed through email.
  • Written exam (objective type) followed by interview of qualified candidates in case there are more than three applicants. Date and time of examination (if any) will be informed through email.
REQUISITES FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

The candidate should fulfil these MINIMUM requirements to be deemed to have successfully completed the course and be awarded the certificate

  • Attendance of over 80%
  • Actively take part in reporting at least 20 peripheral smears every day which includes correlation with the scatter plots and other data from the cell counters.
  • Actively take part in reporting at least one bone marrow (smear and trephine biopsy) every day
  • Actively take part in reporting at least five special tests (from among flow cytometry, coagulation, electrophoresis, immunohematology) every day
  • Present at least one seminar during the six-month period

PURPOSE AND COURSE DETAILS:

The course is designed to augment the candidate’s ability to gather maximum diagnostic information from routine microbiology and serology assays and to provide experience with advanced techniques including automated bacterial aerobic cultures, anaerobic and fungal cultures, mycobacteriology, MALDI, Film arrays, serological tests on CLIA and ELISA platforms, Immunofluorescence. Sound knowledge of basic microbiology is the pre-requisite for optimal learning. Additional exposure to Molecular testing to diagnose infections will also be provided.

COURSE DURATION:

The candidate will attend the course for six months starting on the first working day of July 2022 and concluding on the last working day of December 2022

INTAKE: ONE CANDIDATE PER SESSION (6 months)

MD or DNB in Microbiology. The degree should have been obtained from a recognized institution. There is no age limit.

COURSE SYLLABUS:

The following areas will be covered as part of the main training over a period of 5 months

  • Aerobic cultures, identification and sensitivity on VITEC V2C platform and MALDI
  • Anerobic cultures
  • Fungal cultures
  • Mycobacteriology and Mycology
  • Infectious serology immunoassays
  • Quality control in microbiology and serology
SPECIALTY POSTING:

Molecular Biology – PCR based assays for infectious diseases, GenXpert, Film Array (Biofire), HLA B27 by Array.

Majority of theoretical knowledge will be through self-learning, though part of it would also be through interaction with laboratory staff. Practical knowledge will be through observation and one-to one interaction. Additional knowledge will be through the institution’s planned teaching programs.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES:

PURPOSE AND COURSE DETAILS:

The course is designed to provide the candidate with sufficient exposure to advanced biochemical assays and testing platforms including immunoassay, electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis, nephelometry and mass spectrometry. The candidate’s knowledge of routine biochemical assays will also be reinforced during the period of the course.

MD or DNB in Biochemistry, MD in Pathology, MD in Laboratory Medicine. The degree should have been obtained from a recognized institution. There is no age limit.

  • Theoretical foundation of TQM
  • Concept of system and processes
  • Application of these principles in preanalytical analytical and post analytical phases of the laboratory work flow to achieve total quality
  • Aspects of method validation - introduce concepts of accuracy, precision, trueness, method comparison (including linear regression analysis), linearity, Reference range validation
  • concepts of error - random and systematic
  • Westgard rules
  • Application of error concept in troubleshooting rule violations and root cause analysis
  • EQA - purpose, procedure, interpretation, RCA
  • Theory of Photometry and modes of assay done on photometric analysers
  • Immunoassay theory and formats - RIA/ELISA/ELFA/CLIA
  • Capillary electrophoresis - theory and interpretation of SPE graphs
  • Immunoelectrophoresis (immunotyping)
  • Other special procedures in biochemistry
  • LC-MS

The course is designed to provide experience with clinical cytogenetics techniques including culture, harvesting, banding techniques, karyotyping of peripheral blood, bone marrow and amniotic fluid samples for diagnosis of both oncologic and non-oncologic conditions, and FISH

COURSE DURATION:

The candidate will attend the course for six months starting on the first working day of July 2022 and concluding on the last working day of December 2022

INTAKE: ONE CANDIDATE PER SESSION (6 months)
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

MD or DNB in Pathology / MD Laboratory Medicine/MD Anatomy. The degree should have been obtained from a recognized institution. There is no age limit.

COURSE SYLLABUS:

The following areas will be covered as part of the training over a period of 6 months

  • Setting up peripheral blood, bone marrow and amniotic fluid cultures
  • Harvesting of cells.
  • Banding techniques
  • Metaphase and interphase FISH preparation
  • Interpretation of karyotypes and FISH

Majority of theoretical knowledge will be through self-learning, though part of it would also be through interaction with laboratory staff. There will be a major focus on bench-top training to give the candidate a sound foundation. Interpretation skills will be through one to one interaction with the mentor.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES:
  • Through direct interview following screening of the application and bio-data of the applicant in case there are three or less number of applicants. Date of interview will be intimated through email.
  • Written exam (objective type) followed by interview of qualified candidates in case there are more than three applicants. Date of examination (if any) will be intimated through email.
REQUISITES FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

The candidate should fulfil these MINIMUM requirements to be deemed to have successfully completed the course and be awarded the certificate

  • Attendance of over 80%
  • Being able to independently set up cultures of peripheral blood, bone marrow and amniotic fluid
  • Being able to independently harvest these cultures and prepare slides followed by banding
  • Being able to independently prepare slides for FISH
  • Being able to independently capture images and report on karyotypes and FISH
  • Present at least one seminar during the six-month period

PURPOSE AND COURSE DETAILS:

The course is designed to augment the candidate's ability to independently report on histopathology sections from a variety of tissues including radical excisions. Additional exposure to reporting of immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence will be provided.

  • Reporting on small biopsies of various organ systems
  • Reporting on excision specimens including radical excision following the latest AJCC and WHO recommendations
  • Immunofluorescnce techniques and interpretation of skin and renal biopsy immunofluorescence
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Cytology
SPECIALTY POSTINGS:

  • Perform at least one procedure (FNAC) every day
  • Present at least one seminar during the six-month period

PURPOSE AND COURSE DETAILS:

The course is designed to uplift knowledge in the subject of Laboratory Medicine and to impart continuous education to those candidates who desire to have a first-hand experience at centers of excellence that are equipped with state-of the art equipment and processes that are in tune with modern advances in this discipline.

COURSE DURATION:

The candidate will attend the course for a full one year. Date of commencement is FIRST WORKING DAY OF July 2022 or a viable alternative as mutually agreed upon by the candidate and the management of NAALM.

ANNUAL INTAKE: Two candidates
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

MD or DNB in Pathology / Laboratory Medicine / Transfusion Medicine, Diploma in Clinical Pathology, MD Biochemistry, MD Microbiology, MD Laboratory medicine. The degree should have been obtained from a recognized institution. There is no age limit.

COURSE SYLLABUS:
  • Clinical Chemistry: Laboratory Automation, Principles of biochemical analysis and interferences, Interpretation of biochemical results, Immunoassay principles and methods, Serum Protein Electrophoretic techniques including immunofixation, Nephelometry, Electrolytes, Chromatographic techniques including introduction to LCMS and New-born screening tests.
  • Clinical hematology and Immunohematology: Complete blood counting techniques including interpretation of cell counter data. Coagulation assays, Hypercoagulable state evaluation, Hemoglobin Electrophoresis, Red cell abnormalities including membrane abnormalities, Blood grouping, Red cell antibody tests, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy studies, Flow-cytometry including immunophenotpying, HLA typing and tissue cross matching.
  • Clinical pathology: Manual and automated methods of urine analysis, stool examination, semen analysis. Examination of body fluids.
  • Microbiology and serology: Basic microbiology stains and their interpretation, safety and infection management, principles of serological tests, immunofluorescence assays, Manual infectious serology. (Microbiological culture tests are not included)
  • Cytology: Basics of cyto-preparatory techniques, Performance of FNAC and PAP smear procedures, interpretation of smears and cell blocks.
  • Quality control and quality assurance: Understanding of accreditation requirements, development of quality management system including system processes, designing and QC program, monitoring QC goals including CV%, Bias, laboratory error, Sigma metrics, Internal audit principles, Root-cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions.
  • General laboratory management: Setting up a lab, patient / client management, laboratory informatics, data analytics, principles of phlebotomy.
  • Very brief overview of advanced techniques in histopathology, molecular diagnostics and cytogenetics.

The course content can be tailored to the needs of the candidate based on agreement by the training institution and the candidate.

  • Should conduct at least two seminars during the course tenure
  • Should produce at least one original research paper on subject of choice during the course tenure
  • Should assist in day to day departmental activities in the area of posting as and when required
