Statement of purpose :

One year advanced certificate course in laboratory medicine has been designed keeping the following objectives in mind

  • To provide an overview of workflow management in an advanced diagnostic laboratory
  • To provide hands-on experience to the technologist with advanced diagnostic modalities in specialised areas
  • To improve employability amongst the qualified technologists based on the special training received

Competence expected at the end of course :

  • To have a working knowledge of general workflow in a laboratory
  • To be able to inspect the sample for acceptance criteria for required testing
  • To be able to process the sample in a manner defined for the area of specialised testing
  • To be able to operate the analysers and carry out the test
  • To be able to trouble shoot problems encountered during testing
  • To be able to interpret test results in order to identify abnormal test results that would require special attention
  • Detailed knowledge of QC analysis, acceptance of QC and handling of outliers
  • Knowledge of accreditation requirements and quality management system
  • Effective handling and disposal of samples after their defined retention period
  • Laboratory safety
  • Knowledge of inventory management

Minimum Eligibility criteria :

  • MSc in Medical Lab Technology
  • MSc Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology, Biotechnology, Clinical Cytogenetics and Allied subjects)

Duration of course : One year (full-time course)

Part A:
General laboratory workflow and routine laboratory testing – a holistic review (duration 2 months common for all applicants) Posting in department s of Phlebotomy and Sample accession

Part B:
Advanced laboratory training in the subject of interest (duration 10 months)

Proposed disciplines for advanced laboratory training :

  • Flowcytometry and Immunohematology
  • Advanced biochemistry including Electrophoresis and LCMS
  • Advanced Microbiological techniques including Film array, Maldi, Mycobacteriology etc.
  • Molecular Diagnostics
  • Cytogenetics
  • Serology, Immunoassays, Immunofluorescence

Mode of selection :

  • Interview of shortlisted applicants
  • Written examination and interview of shortlisted candidates (in case of excess of applicants)

Fee to be charged on selection :

  • Rs. 100000/- payable in up to two instalments

Stipend to be paid to the selected candidates :

  • Rs.10000/- per month. No provision for accommodation and other expenses.

Theory sessions :

  • One / Two sessions every week (1.5 hrs each) to cover general topics related to Quality, Safety etc, as well as specific topics of technical relevance. Periodic evaluations will be included (internal assessment)

Award of certificate :

  • Eligibility will entail putting in at least 80% attendance. There will be a final exam (combination of theory, practical and viva)
